A minimum of thirteen passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
